Audience: Effects Theory

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

A passive audience close passive audience An audience which accepts the messages encoded in a media text without challenge. is more likely to accept the messages encoded in a media text without challenge and are therefore more likely to be directly affected by the message

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

An active audience engages with media, interprets messages based on their own experiences and backgrounds, and can challenge or negotiate the dominant meaningInstead of passively absorbing content, an active audience actively selects what to consume, interacts with it, and creates their own meaning, which can include disagreeing with the message

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

is a concept in mass communication that suggests media messages are powerful tools that can directly influence and manipulate audiences.

4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE:

  • Media Product: A daily news podcast like The Daily from the New York Times.
  • Why it fits: The primary use for consuming The Daily is the need to stay informed and surveil the immediate environment (society, politics, world events)
PERSONAL IDENTITY:
  •  A reality television show such as Queer Eye.
  • Why it fits: Audiences often seek out media that reinforces their personal values or helps them explore their identity. Queer Eye, with its focus on self-acceptance

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

The breathtaking visuals, captured with high production value, offer immediate entertainment and diversion, allowing the audience to escape the mundane reality of their own lives and witness extraordinary underwater ecosystems. This high fidelity aesthetic also satisfies the need for information and surveillance, as viewers acquire knowledge about marine biology in an engaging format. The concept of virtuality is fulfilled as the media text transports the audience to remote, inaccessible locations, creating an immersive experience of being there without the physical constraints or dangers. This leads to vicarious pleasure, where viewers experience the thrill, tension, and wonder of the natural world through the lens of the camera, perhaps by observing a high-stakes predator-prey interaction, thereby feeling a physical or emotional response (visceral pleasure) from a safe distance. Finally, the shared viewing experience and subsequent discussion of the stunning footage can lead to social interaction and integration, as audiences talk about the clip with friends and family
