How are blockbuster films marketed and distributed globally? Answer with reference to Black Widow (CSP) [9 Marks] (2 paragraphs)
Blockbuster films are marketed globally through huge, carefully coordinated campaigns that try to reach audiences everywhere at once. Studios rely on things like star power, trailers, social media buzz, and cross‑platform promotion to build hype months before release. With Black Widow, Disney leaned heavily on the popularity of the MCU and Scarlett Johansson’s established fanbase. The film was promoted across Marvel’s social channels, Disney-owned TV networks, and through interviews, posters, and teaser drops designed to trend worldwide. Merchandise deals and brand partnerships helped keep the film visible, and because Disney owns so many media outlets, it could push the film across multiple platforms at the same time — a clear example of synergy and vertical integration in action.
Global distribution for blockbusters also depends on the power of major conglomerates to release films simultaneously across different countries. Disney handled Black Widow’s distribution itself, which meant it could control how and when the film reached audiences worldwide. Because it came out during the pandemic, Disney used a hybrid release strategy: cinemas and Disney+ Premier Access on the same day. This approach showed how global distribution is shifting, with streaming becoming a major part of how audiences access new releases. It also helped reduce piracy and kept the global conversation around the film happening at the same time. Overall, Black Widow demonstrates how big studios use their size, resources, and platforms to market and distribute films on a worldwide scale.

Example PETA Paragraph:
Whilst most may choose to link success with money made in the world of film, depending on the goals and expectations of the director and production staff working on a project, success can be measured via many other metrics. We see this in ‘I, Daniel Blake’, where rather than success being defined through purely financial means, a large part of their success can be measured through the commotion and conversation that arose in response to their clever marketing and management techniques. Specifically we saw Ken Loach and the marketing department choose to promote their film, centred around the mistreatment from the government of working class individuals, by projecting it on the side of the houses of parliament. This reinforces Loach’s preference for films centred around social realism, whilst plainly targeting those he believes to be responsible for the issues that he calls out in his film. Success in this case may be measured via the buzz created by this stunt with newspapers across the country making headlines and articles centred around the incident, raising awareness not only for the film itself but also awareness of a key social issue that Loach created ‘I, Daniel Blake’ with the goal of aiding.
